Ben on...Styris to miss tri-series

It looks like Scott Styris won't be joining the Black Caps in Australia. He twinged a hamstring in his 74* against Otago on Tuesday, so didn't take the field against Canterbury today (Auckland looking like they will score big). And that pretty much rules him out of playing in the tri-series.

I think a lot of people who write in on this blog (especially in the 'comments' section) underestimate the importance of styris to the side. he is by far the most consistent middle order batsman of the last 4 years or so, and when he scores big NZ win at least half the time. His rather low career average can be put down to the fact that he was originally in the side as a bowling allrounder and batted at number 8 or 9 for a period of time. Not to forget his usefulness with the ball. More importantly, he is prepared to stick it out in the middle - the Champions trophy knockout game against Pakistan is a good example. Sad that he's injured when NZ really need him to bolster a wretched batting lineup, hope he's around for the World Cup.
