Format of the State Championship final

Something really does need to be done about the format of the State Championship final. Competition leader Wellington went into the game only needing a draw, and a draw is what they have been playing for since ball one. 596 runs in 250 overs is not much in the way of entertainment. Wellington deserve some advantage for earning the most points in the competition, but surely the fact that the final is played at their home ground is enough of a reward?

I think the format's fine. There has to be some reward for finishing top of the table.

Plus if a draw didn't decide the competition we'd end up with a tied championship, which could happen every other year as draws are pretty common in cricket.

I guess I should mention that I might be slightly biased as I am a Wellingtonian...

The format is bloody stupid - all the teams should play each other home and away and that should be the end of it. No half-baked 8 round comp. No final. All a final does is give the second-best team a chance to cause controversy - if they win everyone says "good one but they were only second-best really" and if they don't win then it really is a waste of time...

I agree completely Jez. The first-class competition doesn't need a final at all. Especially not one where a draw is enough for one side to win the competition.

The final format is fine. Having the final played over five days evens the playing field. Most of the first class players are not used to having three extra sessions, and that is a long time in cricket, so an outright result is more likely. It turns out that Wellington couldn't hold on anyway. Go CD.

"Evens the playing field" - in what way? What is the point of playing a final in a different format to the rest of the competition? The competition is flawed.
