Mr Fix-it

Okay. Let's forget the horrors of the weekend and start thinking about the future. The New Zealand team only has a couple of days to regroup for the second test. There is no time to call up replacement players, so what would you do to make sure we do better. And lets try to stay positive.

I think I would replace McMillan with Wiseman and bring Franklin in for Mills. I know the batting failed in the first test, but the top order has a big reputation and it is time that they lived up to it. We bat a long way down so can spare a spot in the batting order and Adelaide is likely to take spin, so Wiseman needs to come in. Mills did well with the new ball and then fell away badly, Franklin will give the attack more variation and more consistency.

Jim White and Aimee Mann sound good. They should open the bowling.

Is it really likely to take spin? I remember seeing a preview before the series that questioned the received wisdom on Adelaide through saying that spinners have never really been successful. Given it's a flat track, I'd expect line and length bowlers to have more success. Which means that I'd select, ummmm, hmmm, Jim
White and Aimee Mann sound good.

What's to be lost in playing Butler instead of Wiseman?

What do you think of the pre-season openers in the State Shield teams? What do you think Ian O'Brien's chances of a call-up this summer are? He's been rested from the Wellington selection game starting today because he was so outstanding last week.

I am not a happy man Dan. But living in denial is much nicer than accepting what happened on the weekend. And there has to be somthing positive amongst the wreakage. Remember that our biggest ever losing margin came in 2002, just before we thrashed India at home and then performed so magnificently in Sri Lanka. Also, at Glouster Bracewell had a terrible time in the four-day matches to start with, but a brilliant time in the one-dayers. But the one-day success eventually bled into the four-day game and in his last season the team blitzed the competition. I hope that we are simply going through the same process in the international game.
