Bond and Marshall in county cricket

Shane Bond and Hamish Marshall have just signed contracts and will join Craig Spearman at Gloucestershire next season. I am sure the stint will be of benefit of Marshall, but are we really willing to risk Bond's fragile back on the exhausting county circuit?

I reckon we leave Bond in NZ over the winter at our peril. He needs match play, that much was obvious in SA. I worry more about Marshall, who seems to be on a downward spiral and needs more confidance than playing for a 2nd rate county side can provide.

That's a fair view, but I don't agree entirely. I would be happy for Bond to play a few games at the tail end of the English season to get himself ready for the New Zealand season, but the full county itinerary is just so intensive that I worry it will be counter-productive. On the other hand, I can't see a better environment for Marshall to learn to knuckle down. I have heard he is a poor trainer, so I am hoping the grind of a season will drill those bad habits out of him.
