Its like a Russian novel and the ball is made of wood

Americans try to get to grip with cricket again. I don't know where the hell they got the idea that the game is played with wooden balls.

Cork is almost wood, surely? It comes from oak trees, doesn't it?

Well yes there is some cork and wool thrown in, but if one doesn;t mention leather while describing the cricket ball, it's a bit like saying tennis racquets have strings.
